Description
Yumoto Onsen, situated at the headwaters of the Yukawa River in the mountains above Nikkō, was among the most remote and celebrated thermal springs in the Kantō region. Surrounded by volcanic terrain and dense forest, the hot spring village offered a dramatically different visual character from the ornamental shrine complexes below: here the subject is mountain wilderness and therapeutic landscape. Kiyochika's print likely depicts steam rising from the volcanic springs, the timber buildings of the small settlement, or a panoramic view incorporating the surrounding peaks. Steam emerging from hot spring water provided atmospheric material well suited to his technique—the gradual transition from the opacity of steam to cold surrounding air parallels the tonal blending achieved through careful bokashi work. As part of the broader Nikkō tourism circuit that expanded following improved rail access, Yumoto represented the terminus of a journey into increasingly remote mountain scenery.
