Description
A companion design to Shoda's other frog-on-lotus composition, this print likely presents the subject from a different viewpoint or at a different moment — the frog perhaps in motion, or the lotus shown at a different stage of bloom. The lotus motif carried associations with Buddhist purity, as the flower rises from muddy water to bloom above the surface. Shoda's nihonga background would have sharpened his attention to the botanical specifics: the waxy curvature of the lotus leaf, the texture of the seed pod, and the muted olive and buff tones of the plant against water. The frog, rendered with the same close naturalistic observation, grounds the composition in the ordinary world of the garden pond, balancing the flower's elevated symbolism.
