$200–$1,500. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Shoda Koho's elegant nature prints are beautifully produced and accessible to beginning collectors.
This [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock print presents a beach at night under moonlight, the first of what appears to be multiple treatments of this subject in Shoda's oeuvre. The moon illuminates the shore and ocean in broad tonal bands, with wet sand reflecting the sky's glow in a mirror-like sheen. Shoda's beach is empty of human presence, allowing the natural drama of light on water and sand to fill the composition entirely. The shoreline curves through the image, its edge marking the boundary where reflected moonlight meets the deeper darkness of dry sand. Waves reach the shore as pale lines of foam, their rhythm suggested by the repeating pattern of light and dark at the water's edge. The print exemplifies Shoda's talent for making darkness luminous, treating night not as an obstacle to seeing but as a medium through which different kinds of light become visible.
