Description
This print belongs to Kokei's Bust Portraits (daikubi-e) series, specifically the eighth edition, fourth design — a serialized project that places his work in direct dialogue with the Edo-period tradition of large-head actor prints pioneered by Sharaku in 1794 and continued by Toyokuni and his pupils. The series format focuses each composition tightly on the head and upper body, eliminating environmental context and requiring the face alone to carry all expressive weight. Onoe Baiko VII is shown as Masaoka from Meiboku Sendai Hagi, the role for which he was particularly celebrated. The daikubi-e format amplifies the actor's makeup, the precise drawing of the eyes and mouth, and the arrangement of the hair, which in Masaoka's case follows the dignified married-woman style appropriate to her position. Kokei carved this series on hardwood blocks, allowing extraordinarily fine line resolution, and used [washi](/glossary/washi) or comparable absorbent paper to hold the precision of each printed stroke.
