Description
This version of Kotozuka's bamboo subject probably presents a view emphasizing the density and verticality of the growth, with culms staggered at varying distances to suggest recession into depth. The rendering of spatial depth without European-style linear perspective was a persistent challenge in Japanese woodblock printing, typically addressed through overlapping forms, tonal graduation, and scale variation. Kotozuka's work reflects an internalization of these conventions alongside his awareness of [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga)'s more Western-influenced spatial treatments. The print is likely medium to large in format — Kotozuka worked across a range of sheet sizes — and printed with careful attention to registration, as misalignment in a bamboo composition would be immediately visible in the parallel vertical elements. It is one of several related prints that together constitute a study of a single natural subject across varied conditions.
