Description
In this version of the bamboo forest subject, Kotozuka may focus on a specific spatial relationship within the grove — the transition from bright edge to dark interior, or the view along a path between ranks of culms. His Kyoto production method allowed him to revise compositions between editions, and differences among bamboo forest variants may reflect both revision and distinct viewpoints. The print likely employs a relatively cool, green-dominant palette interrupted by the pale grey or cream of the [washi](/glossary/washi) ground visible between stalks. The forest compositions in particular demonstrate Kotozuka's facility with negative space: the gaps between culms carry as much visual weight as the stalks themselves. Washi's absorbency allows the printed greens to sit softly on the sheet rather than appearing flat or chalky, contributing to the naturalistic quality of the foliage.
