Description
A variant in Kotozuka's bamboo forest series, this print likely presents the grove subject in a different season or lighting condition than related compositions. The bamboo forests around Kyoto — particularly those of Sagano and Arashiyama — were repeatedly visited by Kotozuka across seasons, and differences in palette among variants often reflect winter light, the dense green of summer, or the particular quality of autumn afternoon sun filtering through the canopy. The forest format offers compositional opportunities the single-stalk prints do not: a path or opening can create a focal point, figures may be included to establish scale, and the sky visible through the canopy can serve as a luminous counterpoint to the dense, shadowed interior. This print is one of several that together document Kotozuka's sustained engagement with the forest as a subject distinct from the isolated bamboo motif.
