Description
A third treatment of the bamboo-in-wind theme in Kotozuka's oeuvre, this print likely represents a distinct compositional variation — possibly a closer cropping of the canes, a different wind direction, or an altered time of day relative to the other versions. Kotozuka returned to favored subjects across multiple editions, adjusting palette, block carving, or season to produce related yet independent works. The woodblock medium allows subtle shifts in the [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) graduation of the background sky to signal morning versus dusk, and the [baren](/glossary/baren) pressure applied during printing could modulate the density of the ink across bamboo leaves. Such serial revisitation of a motif was standard practice among Kyoto-based self-publishing printmakers of his generation.
