Description
The forests of Nara — the cryptomeria groves of Kasuga Taisha and the mixed woodland of Nara-koen — served as a subject distinct from the formal garden landscapes that dominate Kyoto print subjects. This print likely depicts the primeval character of the Kasuga forest, where tall cedar columns rise through filtered light above a moss-covered floor, the sacred grove having been protected from logging for over a millennium. Kotozuka would have used vertical block carving to suggest the straight trunks of mature conifers, with graduated green and grey tones building depth through the layered canopy. The soft diffusion of light through dense overhead foliage — a quality well suited to [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation — gives these forest scenes their atmospheric density, setting them apart from Kotozuka's more architecturally structured Kyoto landscapes.
