Description
The torii gate of Gion's Yasaka Shrine — marking the transition from the Gion entertainment district into the shrine precinct — is one of Kyoto's most recognizable landmarks. The gate stands at the end of Shijo Avenue, and the view through or toward it encompasses both the colorful commercial life of Gion and the sacred space beyond. Kotozuka's print renders this threshold with the attentiveness to architectural proportion and atmospheric color that characterize his Kyoto landscape work.
