Description
Rakuhoku (洛北), the northern district of Kyoto, encompasses the forested areas around Kurama, Kibune, and the Takano River. Night rain in this district would be set against a landscape of dark cedars, mountain slopes, and rushing streams rather than urban architecture. This second version of the Rakuhoku night rain subject likely varies the viewpoint or season from the first: Kurama in autumn rain, or the lantern-lit path to Kibune-jinja, where paper lanterns strung along the approach reflect on rain-wet stone. The compositional challenge of the nocturne under rain involves compressing tonal range so that the darkness reads as luminous rather than flat—achieved through layered blue-black grounds with selective lighter passages indicating water surfaces and distant light sources. The title's explicit localization to Rakuhoku distinguishes these prints from Kotozuka's broader Kyoto rain subjects.
