The Japanese subtitle 嵐山翠雨 translates roughly as "Arashiyama in green rain," pointing to a mist-softened summer view of this celebrated western Kyoto district where the Oi River bends beneath wooded hills. Arashiyama's bamboo groves, riverside willows, and the Togetsukyo bridge made it one of Kotozuka's most revisited subjects. A rain composition would have allowed him to layer pale grey and green washes through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation, blurring the treeline into atmospheric haze while keeping near-ground elements — a riverside path, a boat, or the bridge railing — in sharper relief. Rain lines printed as thin parallel strokes over the full composition are a technical device he likely employed here.
