Description
Sarusawa Pond (猿沢池) — the small, perfectly circular pond that lies below Kofukuji Temple in Nara, famous for the legend of the court lady who drowned herself there and the reflections of the five-story pagoda in its still surface — in summer is surrounded by lotus flowers and the sounds of the frogs that inhabit its banks. Kotozuka's summer treatment of this emblematic Nara scene would deploy the greens and blues of the summer season, the pagoda rising above the lotus-fringed water in a composition that has been painted for a thousand years.
