Description
One of several prints Kotozuka made under the Spring Shower title, each likely depicting a different Kyoto location or compositional approach to the same seasonal subject. This version probably renders cherry blossoms or fresh-leafed trees seen through falling rain, using diagonal rain lines printed in a translucent grey-blue ink over the main composition. The shower subject allowed Kotozuka to demonstrate technical control over atmospheric printing — layers of pale pigment applied with the [baren](/glossary/baren) at varying pressures to achieve the visual texture of rainfall through foliage. Pale pink, white, and green tones would predominate, with the sky handled in soft graduated wash.
