Description
Takao in rain — the same mountain valley west of Kyoto known for its autumn foliage, here depicted in the atmospheric conditions of rainfall — presents a very different subject from the blazing autumn color typically associated with the site. In rain, Takao's narrow valley with its rushing stream and dense forest becomes more intimate and enclosed, the wet foliage intensifying its green or autumn color, the sound of water on leaves creating an atmosphere of immersive natural sensation. Kotozuka's woodblock palette for this rainy-season or autumn-rain scene would be cooler and more muted than his clear-day treatments.
