Description
Fuji 91, edition 84 of 200 from 2000, marks the turn of the millennium in Kaneko's sustained engagement with Mount Fuji. The ninetieth-something iteration of a single subject demonstrates the pop art commitment to seriality that underlies his practice: rather than seeking unique treatments of different subjects, Kaneko subjects the same subject to seemingly inexhaustible variation. Each Fuji is simultaneously familiar and fresh, the mountain's profile an instantly recognizable armature for chromatic and compositional exploration.
