Description
White Morning, edition 20 of 200 from 2005, evokes the particular luminosity of Japanese mornings in winter or early spring, when frost or mist fills the air with a white diffusion that seems to dissolve solid forms into atmosphere. White as a chromatic subject presents a paradox for a printmaker whose strengths lie in bold color contrast: Kaneko likely approaches white morning by modulating the softest end of his palette — pale blues, warm grays, the faintest yellows — to suggest the quality of light rather than its absence.
