Description
The Gion Matsuri — "京都祇園祭," the great summer festival of Kyoto's Yasaka Shrine, one of Japan's three greatest festivals — is Senpan's subject in this undated print, the festival's visual magnificence and communal energy rendered in his bold, direct printmaking style. Senpan returned to the Gion Festival across his career, drawn by its combination of ancient religious ritual, spectacular visual display, and the dense communal experience of a city gathering to celebrate its most important seasonal event. Each version offers a different angle on a festival that provided inexhaustible compositional material.
