Description
A second lamp print, likely showing a different lamp form or a variant impression of a recurring composition. Senpan returned repeatedly to lamps as subject matter, testing different formal approaches to a constant theme. This impression may depict a hanging lamp, a desk lamp, or a paper-shaded floor model—each offering distinct compositional possibilities for a mokuhanga reduced to its essential planes. The sosaku-hanga commitment to single-artist production meant Senpan could experiment with paper weight, color saturation, and impression count outside the constraints of traditional publisher workflows. Many lamp prints in his oeuvre use a two- or three-block scheme: a black key block for structure, a warm color for the lamp's glow, and a cool wash or unprinted reserve for surrounding interior darkness. The repetition of lamp subjects across his work parallels his treatment of bathers and fruit still lifes—Senpan was an artist who found steady interest in narrow subject ranges, deepening his engagement with familiar motifs rather than continuously seeking new ones.
