Description
The Tanabata Star Festival appears again in this undated Senpan print — distinct from his "Tanabata Festival" in composition or approach — the celestial romance of the annual stellar meeting given visual form through the festival's characteristic decorations and communal celebrations. Senpan returned to the Tanabata across his career as he returned to other major festivals, each version approaching the subject from a different angle or emphasizing different aspects of the celebration. The star festival's dual character — astronomical mythology and popular summer festivity — provided inexhaustible compositional material.
