Description
A cow and figures — the domestic animal that was central to Japan's agricultural economy, depicted in proximity to the human figures whose labor was inseparable from the animal's — appear in this mid-twentieth-century Senpan print, the subject placing him in the rural world that was as important to his vision of Japanese life as the festivals and hot springs. Senpan's cow and figures bring the same direct, warm attention to agricultural life that his festival prints brought to communal celebration, honoring the ordinary reality of rural Japan with the same seriousness he gave to the dramatic.
