$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Maekawa's early sosaku-hanga works are historically significant. Bold, expressive prints are most valued.
The Tori-no-Ichi fair — the traditional autumn market held at Otori Shrine on the days of the rooster in November, famous for its kumade (decorative rakes) sold as charms for good fortune — is Senpan's subject in this print. The Tori-no-Ichi was one of the great commercial festivals of old Tokyo, its raucous markets and elaborate kumade vendors creating a scene of urban festivity that Senpan could render with the bold, energetic figural composition that was his specialty. The festival's combination of sacred ritual, commerce, and popular celebration made it an ideal subject.
