"Cell - 4" from 1966 belongs to Maki Haku's "Cell" series, in which discrete units of form — circular, rectangular, or organically bounded — are embedded within the print surface as if contained within membranes. The cellular metaphor draws on biological imagery while remaining firmly abstract: these are not illustrations of cells but compositions in which enclosed, bounded form becomes the primary visual unit. Embossed color on paper gives the "cells" a bodily presence, their boundaries tangible to the touch.
