Description
Emanation - 103 belongs to one of Maki Haku's named series from the Shōwa period, with the high number indicating an extended engagement with a sustained theme. The title 'Emanation' suggests outward radiation from a central source — an appropriate metaphor for Maki's embossed forms, which appear to press outward from the block's surface rather than sit on top of it. Compositionally, works in emanation-type series from this period often feature a dominant central mass from which textural energy radiates: concentric ridges, receding relief, or ink modulation that moves from dense to sparse across the sheet. The washi paper used for such prints must accommodate significant pressure deformation while retaining structural integrity, and the resulting surface occupies a position between two-dimensional print and three-dimensional relief object.
