by Maki Haku
The persimmon — kaki in Japanese — was a subject Maki Haku returned to across several works, drawn to its simple, rounded form and the warm ochre of its flesh. In his hands the familiar autumn fruit becomes something between still life and calligraphic exercise: the round shape carries the same weighted authority as a brushstroke or seal impression, and the color functions abstractly rather than descriptively. Maki bridges here between representational subject and abstract formal interest.
