Description
The tea bowl — chawan — is one of the most culturally loaded objects in Japanese material culture, the central vessel of the tea ceremony and a touchstone for aesthetic values of wabi and sabi: asymmetry, imperfection, the beauty of the weathered and irregular. Maki Haku's engagement with the tea bowl almost certainly treats it as both object and concept — the bowl's curved interior, its weight in the hands, its absorption of color and patina translated into the textured, embossed surface of his prints.
