Description
"Sisterhood," measuring 96 by 66 centimetres, is one of Cozzolino's larger mokuhanga compositions, dedicated to the women who supported her through a difficult year. The scale alone marks a departure from the traditional ōban format of historical Japanese woodblock prints; producing a print this size in mokuhanga requires multiple block registrations across an unusually wide sheet of washi, and each colour pass must be brushed and printed by hand using a baren. The technical demands compound with size — pigment absorption, paper expansion, and registration tolerances all become harder to manage. Cozzolino carved every block herself, in keeping with her exclusively self-directed studio practice. Thematically, the print belongs to a small group of works in which she steps away from landscape and observed subjects toward something explicitly dedicatory and personal. Its release around the winter solstice, framed in her own statement as a marker of seasonal turning, situates the image within the contemplative register that characterises much of her output since 2011.
