Description
This print was shown over three weekends at one of Cozzolino's holiday-season open studios, where impressions were sold both as gifts and to private collectors. Open studio and vernissage formats are central to her economic model: as a full-time mokuhanga artist working outside the gallery system for much of the year, direct sales from her Avigliana workshop supplement the income from her teaching practice. The print itself was carved and hand-printed by the artist, in keeping with the workflow she has used exclusively since adopting mokuhanga in 2011 — water-based pigment brushed onto the block, paper dampened to the right humidity, and impressions pulled one at a time with a baren. Editions from these studio events tend to be modest, often under fifty, with each sheet signed and numbered. The intimate scale of the show, the direct contact with collectors, and the seasonal context all reflect the cottage-industry character of European mokuhanga as Cozzolino practises it.
