Between Times is an accordion-fold mokuhanga artist book organized around figural forms set within abstracted fields. The accordion structure introduces a temporal dimension: the reader unfolds the work sequentially, and the title's suggestion of a liminal or transitional state is reinforced by the way each panel both continues and interrupts the image. Jesse works in water-based pigments on [washi](/glossary/washi), building color through successive printings of individual blocks, a process in which each pass leaves visible evidence of registration and layering. The combination of figurative and abstract subjects indicates that the human figure is partially dissolved into surrounding color areas rather than depicted in full narrative detail. Such an approach draws on mokuhanga's capacity for soft, graduated [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) transitions, where pigment gradients can evoke atmospheric or psychological states as much as physical space. The work functions simultaneously as print, book, and object.
