Description

Hope (2020) is a mokuhanga landscape print in which Brodbeck likely renders a spare natural scene — open water, a horizon line, or emerging light — to evoke a conditional, forward-looking mood. Her water-based pigments on washi characteristically produce soft, luminous gradations through multiple bokashi passes, giving atmospheric transitions between sky and earth or water and shore. The title suggests a threshold subject: early spring ice break-up on a Great Lakes inlet, or the first light reaching a forested edge. Printed without heavy outline, forms emerge instead through tonal layering built across successive carved blocks, a hallmark of Brodbeck's mature technique.
