Description
Veil (2018) is a mokuhanga landscape in which translucency is both subject and technique. The title evokes atmosphere — morning mist over water, a scrim of rain across a tree line, the diffuse light of an overcast sky — and Brodbeck's water-based pigments on dampened washi are particularly suited to rendering such optical phenomena. Thin, successive washes of pigment pressed through the baren accumulate into a soft atmospheric haze rather than a hard-edged image, with forms barely distinguishable from the surrounding tonal field. The 2018 date aligns Veil with Loop from the same year, suggesting a period of sustained investigation into atmospheric and translucent landscape imagery.
