Description

"Bijin on an Engawa" depicts a beautiful woman (bijin) seated on the engawa — the Japanese veranda or raised platform at the edge of a room that mediated between indoor and outdoor space. The engawa was one of Shuntei's favored compositional settings: a transitional space that allowed him to combine the intimate interior world of domestic life with the garden or exterior landscape beyond, the figure positioned at the threshold between the two. The bijin on the engawa was simultaneously protected by the domestic interior and connected to the natural world just beyond.
