Lovers

An abstract woodblock print rendered in a single deep magenta-purple ink on cream paper, dominated by a dense cluster of interlocking rounded and circular forms suggesting clasped hands and fingers, bordered above by two tall vertical bands of solid color. The composition is entirely non-representational, built from carved organic shapes and small punched-out circles against the negative cream ground, with a pencil inscription below reading "Lovers · In Praise of Hands, ed. 30, 1974" and the artist's signature beside a red seal. Naoko Matsubara's 1974 woodcut print "Lovers" balances a compact, bulbous central mass against tall open bands, in a restrained two-tone palette of magenta-purple and cream.
