Echoes from the Deep combines the subjects of rivers and lakes with abstract form, suggesting a composition organized around reflections, depths, and acoustic metaphor. Norman likely builds the image through layered overprinting in cool blue and green registers, with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations moving from light surface tones into darker, denser passages that evoke underwater or sub-surface space. The [washi](/glossary/washi) substrate contributes to the work's atmospheric quality, its fibrous texture interrupting flat color passages in ways that mimic the diffusion of light through water. The title's invocation of echo — sound traveling back from a hidden source — positions the print as a meditation on absence and resonance rather than direct observation of a specific body of water.
