Description

Ueno Park, written as 上野公園, is Tokyo's first public park, established in 1873 on the grounds of the former Kan'ei-ji temple that once rivaled Zojo-ji as the Tokugawa family's spiritual seat. Nouet's oban woodblock print depicts this expansive green space in the Taito ward, which houses the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, a zoo, and the famous avenue of cherry trees that makes Ueno the city's most popular hanami destination each spring. The park sits on a bluff overlooking the Shinobazu Pond, and Nouet may have chosen a vantage point that captures the elevated terrain, the institutional buildings, or the tree-lined promenades that give the park its character. As a European intellectual in Tokyo, Nouet would have frequented Ueno's museums and appreciated the park as a center of cultural life.
