Description
This woodblock print depicts a fugu chochin, a traditional Japanese paper lantern formed in the shape of an inflated puffer fish. These decorative lanterns, constructed from washi stretched over a wire armature, are associated with izakaya culture and coastal festival settings, where their rotund forms and whimsical character serve as shop signs or seasonal ornaments. The "No. 7" designation places the work within a numbered series, suggesting Norikane explored multiple colorways, viewpoints, or compositional arrangements of the same subject. Woodblock printing is particularly suited to this subject: flat areas of color rendered with even ink pressure convey the smooth paper surface of the lantern, while bold outlines define the fish's rounded body and dorsal details. The limited palette typical of such decorative subjects allows the form itself to carry the visual interest. The series format implies a collector's interest in variation within a fixed motif.
