Emperor Yuryaku hunting on Mount Katsuragi—the fifteenth-century emperor known for both fierce energy and the poetry attributed to him in the Man'yoshu—brings together the mythology of imperial hunting and the sacred landscape of the Yamato region where Japanese civilization first took coherent form. The hunting emperor as subject combined royal authority with physical vigor, the landscape of Katsuragi adding layers of poetic and mythological association.
