Description

Autumn foliage viewing — momiji-gari — was a seasonal activity with strong associations in Japanese poetry and visual culture, and river settings amplified the spectacle through reflection. This print from Gekko's bijin-kacho-meisho hybrid series places a woman along the Takino River as the maple and other deciduous trees reach peak color. The palette would be dominated by the warm reds, oranges, and yellows of autumn leaves rendered in multiple pigment passes, with the river providing a blue-grey counterpoint. Gekko's treatment of autumn foliage often showed close attention to the individual leaf shapes of the Japanese maple, rendered through careful key-block cutting that distinguishes the lobed forms. The female figure's kimono would likely echo or contrast the seasonal color scheme, a compositional strategy common in bijin series that integrated seasonal nature subjects. Gradated bokashi along the riverbank and sky areas would lend depth and atmospheric quality to the composition.
