Description

Within the "Fujin fuzoku tsukushi" series, this print identified by the title 競遊君 depicts women engaged in competitive or festive leisure. The term suggests a gathering or competitive activity—possibly boat racing, garden games, or a seasonal festival that formed part of aristocratic or townspeople's recreational culture. Gekko's bijin-ga figures in this series tend toward graceful, elegantly dressed women whose poses and groupings convey specific activity rather than static portraiture. The garments would be rendered with attention to textile pattern—mon (family crests) or seasonal motifs woven or dyed into the fabric—that signal the women's identity, era, or social standing. Color areas were built up through multiple impressions from separately carved blocks, with precise registration ensuring the accuracy of pattern elements within each kimono. The Fujin fuzoku tsukushi series represents Gekko's substantial contribution to Meiji bijin-ga as both documentary record of women's customs and refined aesthetic exercise.
