Description

This sensō-e depicts General Sakuma commanding the Third Brigade during the amphibious assault on Yungcheng Bay, an engagement from the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–95). The Japanese landing at Rongcheng Bay in January 1895 was a significant strategic operation preceding the capture of Weihaiwei. Gekko produced at least three versions of this composition, indicating strong commercial demand for the subject. The print likely shows Sakuma at the prow of a landing vessel or on the shore, directing troops through surf and enemy fire. The choppy bay waters and dramatic sky would have required extensive bokashi printing to achieve atmospheric effect. War prints of this type were typically issued as diptychs or triptychs and sold through print publishers to a public hungry for battlefield imagery.
