Description

This second version of Gekko's Yungcheng Bay assault subject depicts General Sakuma directing the Third Brigade's landing operation during the First Sino-Japanese War. Amphibious assault subjects presented specific compositional challenges for woodblock print artists: depicting both naval and land environments required integrating vessels, surf, beach terrain, and massed troops within a single or multi-sheet composition. Gekko resolved such challenges through diagonal organization, placing the general figure at a compositional apex and cascading troops and boats in recession toward the horizon. The treatment of water — rendered through repeated wave patterns and bokashi gradations — was a test of the printer's skill. As one of three versions, this print likely represents either a different publisher's edition or a compositional variant produced to meet sustained commercial interest in the engagement.
