Description
This print from the 'Fujin Fuzoku Zukushi' (Collection of Ladies' Customs) series depicts a bride (hana yome), one of the most ceremonially significant subjects in the bijin-ga tradition. The composition likely shows the figure in full bridal attire — shiromuku white kimono with the distinctive wataboshi hood or kakeshita under-kimono — rendered through precise color registration across multiple woodblocks. The 'fuzoku zukushi' series structure allowed Gekko to document the full range of formal feminine social roles, with bridal costume representing both peak ceremonial occasion and an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of white textile gradation. Bokashi within the white ground differentiates fabric layers and conveys the formal weight of the bridal ensemble.
