Description
The warship Yaeyama death-defying squad in Rongcheng Bay depicts a naval episode from the Sino-Japanese War when small boat crews undertook dangerous missions in defended enemy waters. The combination of naval action, small-boat maneuvering, and the dramatic bay setting gave Gekko a composition different from the land battle triptychs: figures in a boat on open water, the vulnerability of their position against the vastness of the sea emphasizing the heroism of their mission.
