Description

The Kabuki play Seki no to—Barrier Gate—is one of the most formally demanding works in the dance-drama repertoire, its climactic scene featuring the tree spirit disguised as a courtier performing an elaborate dance while simultaneously trying to steal a sacred cherry tree. The figure of the courtier/spirit in formal Heian dress, the cherry blossoms, and the moonlit barrier gate setting gave Gekko a subject of maximum visual and theatrical richness.
