Description
Kinugayoihime—the Lady of the Silken Night Robe—is a figure from Japanese poetry and legend associated with unrequited waiting and the pathos of separated lovers. The name itself evokes the waiting woman motif that appears throughout classical Japanese literature, the woman who waits through the night in the hope of a lover's return becoming an emblem of faithful longing that resonated with Meiji-era audiences who valued classical literary references in their visual art.
