Mari Tahei hunting tigers—a scene from the folklore of Japanese adventurers in Korea or Asia—depicts a legendary figure whose tiger hunting exploits entered popular culture through kabuki plays and oral tradition. The tiger hunt in an exotic landscape gave Gekko an opportunity to combine animal naturalism with figure painting in a composition charged with exotic adventure, the dangerous quarry and the skilled hunter in dynamic confrontation.
