Description
Nakamura Kansuke Masatoki of the Gishi Shijushichi-zu series appears in what may also reference the Kabuki performance tradition surrounding the forty-seven ronin story—the tag combining the warrior's historical identity with the theatrical representation that had made him a familiar figure on stage. The boundary between historical portraiture and theatrical costume was deliberately porous in these series, reflecting how thoroughly kabuki had shaped popular understanding of the ronin story.
