Description
A fourth variant in Gekko's series on the Haiyang Island naval action of the First Sino-Japanese War, this print presents another compositional view of the engagement in the Yellow Sea. Gekko's sensō-e often appeared as multi-sheet triptychs or as separately issued single panels covering the same engagement from different vantage points, allowing publishers to maximize commercial output from a single news event. This design likely differs from the companion prints in its focal point — perhaps emphasizing a specific vessel, a moment of crew action, or the island shoreline in the background — while sharing the same conventions of dramatic sea state, gunsmoke rendered through layered gray bokashi, and the contrast between the dark metallic forms of warships and the agitated water. The print reflects the rapid production schedules of Meiji war print publishing, where designs moved from sketch to retail sale within days of news arriving.
