Description

The Fujin Fuzoku Zukushi series surveyed the daily customs, arts, and activities of women in Meiji Japan, and this sheet depicts Orimono — a term meaning weaving or textile work, though the parenthetical 'Folding Paper' in the title may indicate origami or folded textile display as the specific activity shown. The subject placed a woman in the context of one of the traditional domestic or artistic arts that defined feminine accomplishment in the period. Gekko rendered such scenes with careful attention to the woman's kimono, the objects associated with the activity, and the interior or garden setting that framed her. The Fujin Fuzoku Zukushi format — a compendium of women's customs — had precedent in earlier Edo bijin-ga print series, but Gekko's Meiji-era version documented a transitional moment when traditional arts coexisted with new social forms. Technically, prints in this series employed fine key-block lines for fabric pattern detail and selective bokashi gradations to model the figure's form against the background field.
