Rosei's dream—a Chinese legend in which the scholar Lu Sheng dreams an entire lifetime of achievement, failure, love, and loss during the brief time it takes to cook a pot of millet—was a subject rich with the Buddhist resonance of impermanence. The moment of waking, with the dream life dissolving into the reality of an unchanged roadside inn, provided Gekko with a subject of temporal dislocation that the woodblock medium's own flatness—collapsing experienced time into a single instant—could powerfully render.
